When choosing a CrossFit gym, there are a few important things to consider:
First, look for an OnBoarding program. Even lifelong exercisers are likely to face unfamiliar movements in CrossFit, so it’s important to find a gym with an introductory program to help prepare you to safely join group classes. This gives you an opportunity to learn the movements, understand how the class flows, and get a coach's input on how you should approach your workouts to find success.
Second, make sure it’s the right environment for you. Some gyms run large group classes while others run smaller classes to allow for more individual coaching. Some gyms promote more competition with their members while others focus on helping their members improve their fitness to create a healthier lifestyle. Some gyms have a younger crowd while others have more middle-aged members with kids. You need to decide what environment fits with your goals and will give you the support, resources and accountability to keep you on track.
Third, consider convenience. Does the gym have class times that work with your schedule? Is it located nearby your work or home so there are less obstacles preventing you from getting to the gym?
And lastly, consider the coaching. Is your coach building a relationship with you, getting to know more about your goals, and coaching you in the way you need? Are they fostering a supportive and welcoming environment in their classes?
CrossFit is well-known for community. Is going to the gym the best hour of your day?
Regardless of where you go, one thing remains true: in walking through the doors of a CrossFit gym, you’ve taken the first step towards a lifetime of improved health and a more vibrant life.
