I'm a Nutrition Coach and I Eat Cookies

As a nutrition coach at a CrossFit gym, I often hear the question, “Are you allowed to eat that?” when I indulge in something sweet, like a cookie. This question reflects a common misconception about nutrition: that healthy eating means strict rules and deprivation. I’m here to challenge that notion and share why embracing balance is essential for creating a sustainable, healthy lifestyle.

The Reality of Nutrition

Nutrition can often feel overwhelming, filled with conflicting information and the pressure to adhere to restrictive diets. But at its core, nutrition should be about nourishing your body, not punishing it. My philosophy is straightforward: food is fuel, but it’s also a source of joy. When we prioritize balance, we can enjoy a wide variety of foods—cookies included—without guilt or shame.

The Power of “Off-Plan” Foods

“Off-plan” foods, like cookies, are often seen as the enemy in a quest for health. However, labeling foods as “good” or “bad” can create an unhealthy relationship with food. When we deny ourselves the foods we love, it often leads to cravings, bingeing, and an unhealthy cycle of restriction and guilt. By incorporating “off-plan” foods into our diets, we can satisfy those cravings without derailing our progress.

Enjoyment and Mindfulness

Eating cookies isn’t just about the treat itself; it’s about the experience. Whether I’m enjoying a cookie at a networking event or baking with friends, it’s about savoring the moment. Mindful eating encourages us to appreciate our food and its role in our lives. When we eat with intention and gratitude, we can enjoy our favorite foods while also making space for nourishing choices.

Creating a Healthy Lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle isn’t defined by the absence of certain foods; it’s about cultivating habits that support overall well-being. This means finding a balance that works for you—one that allows for indulgence while prioritizing nutritious foods most of the time. By focusing on moderation rather than restriction, we can create a sustainable approach to eating that fosters both physical and mental health.

Modeling Healthy Behavior

As a nutrition coach, I understand the importance of leading by example. When clients see me enjoying a cookie, it reinforces the idea that healthy eating isn’t about perfection; it’s about making conscious choices. I want my clients to feel empowered to enjoy their favorite foods without fear of judgment. After all, a balanced approach to nutrition can coexist with fitness goals.

So, yes, I eat cookies! And I encourage my clients to do the same. Embracing balance in our diets isn’t just liberating; it’s essential for long-term health and happiness. By allowing ourselves the freedom to enjoy all types of foods, we can cultivate a positive relationship with food that supports our overall well-being. Let’s celebrate the cookies—and everything else that makes life delicious—while also prioritizing the nourishing choices that fuel our bodies. Cheers to a balanced approach to nutrition and a joyful, healthy lifestyle!
